Sesame Seeds for Knee Pain?

Sesame Seeds for Knee Pain?

Chiropractic Elmhurst IL Knee Pain

Eating sesame seeds offers pain relief that is superior to Tylenol for people who suffer from knee osteoarthritis in Elmhurst.  That's good news, here's why:

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) state that nearly one in two people will develop symptomatic knee osteoarthritis by the age of 85 years.  With as many as 12.1% of adults aged 60+ suffering from knee arthritis. Considering expensive knee replacements typically only last about 15 years, finding a safe alternative to delay or avoid surgery just makes sense!

  • The symptoms of knee arthritis include pain, swelling, abnormal bone growth, disfigured cartilage and loss of motion. These symptoms can have a severe impact in just doing normal activities of daily living like climbing stairs, going to the bathroom and getting up out of a chair.

  • Tylenol usage for pain management comes with a whole host of side effects and risks including: hearing loss, liver damage, asthma (540% increased risk in children!), ulcers, and a 2-fold increased risk of blood cancer.

Here's the details.  A study published in the International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases found that eating 40 grams/day of powdered sesame seeds reduced pain (the control group received two 500 mg doses of Tylenol twice a day along with 500 mg of glucosamine once daily) significantly reduced pain scores when compared against the control (Tylenol) group.  In addition, sesame seeds did just as well as Tylenol on the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) Questionnaire and the Timed Up and Go (TUG) Test.  How much is 40 grams a day?  About 4 tablespoons - don't forget to grind them (a coffee grinder works great),  and buy organic raw seeds for maximum pain relief.  You can also try take a teaspoon or two of a pure organic sesame oil.

Here are some other benefits of sesame seed/sesame oil:

  • Cholesterol lowering effects: In a 2005 study, participants eating 1.5 ounces of ground, toasted sesame seeds along with a low-cholesterol diet reduced total cholesterol by six percent and LDL “bad” cholesterol by nearly 10 percent.

  • Great protein source: 100 grams of seeds provides about 18 grams of protein.

  • Control diabetes: A study published in 2011 in the Clinical Journal of Nutrition showed that sesame oil improved the effectiveness of the oral antidiabetic drug glibenclamide in type 2 diabetic patients.

  • Lower high blood pressure: A study published in 2006 in the Yale Journal of Biological Medicine benefits to participants with high blood pressure that were either on dieuretics or beta-blockers.

  • Anti-cancer effects: Laboratory studies have found that sesamin from sesame seeds can suppress the formation of new blood vessels and the pro-invasion molecules in breast cancer cells. Other studies have found that the same lignan may inhibit the proliferation of tumor cells from leukemia, multiple myeloma, colon, prostate, pancreas, and lung cancers.
